Wednesday, October 9, 6:30–9 p.m.

Have you taken a trip that’s changed your life? Do you want to document your adventures with a paying assignment for a magazine or newspaper? This information-packed, inspiring workshop, taught by freelance journalist Jennifer Bradley Franklin, whose work has appeared in American Way, Go (for AirTran), Alaska Airlines Magazine, Bespoke, Teen People, Jetsetter, Daily Candy and more, will show you how to take all those e-mails and journal entries and turn them into print-ready and profitable pieces. See what people are saying about this workshop:

In this 2.5-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to grow (or start) your freelance writing career by mastering one of its most engaging, sought-after markets: Travel. You’ll learn the strategies that successful travel writers use, realities of the job and pitfalls to avoid (hint: Telling an editor, “I’m headed to Costa Rica on vacay — do you want a story?” is NOT advisable.).

We’ll discuss the different styles and markets in travel writing (guidebooks, magazines, newspapers, websites, blogs), analyze the elements of a strong pitch letter and study the key components to good travel writing. In short, you’ll learn how your writing can pay for your next trip!

Pack your bags and get ready to learn:

* How to break into travel writing

* The rules of reporting, interviewing, finding sources and local color

* What travel editors look for, and how to set yourself apart from the crowd

* Where to find story ideas, and how to pitch them successfully

* The realities of the press trip (also known as the fam trip, research trip, or junket) – & how to get asked back

* How to turn one trip into multiple story ideas
