Intro to Cartooning
an 8-week course that meets Wednesdays, July 10–August 28, 2013, 7-8:30 pm
On the lookout for a fun , step-by-step introductory cartooning class in Atlanta? Do you find yourself doodling? Do you have a knack for storytelling? Got a sense of humor? Then put your natural talent to work and learn the basics of cartooning in this enriching and entertaining eight-week course targeted at beginners but open to all levels.
In this class, venerated cartoonist and illustrator Stephen Sweny will teach you how to create and draw your own cartoon characters, faces and figures — human, animal, whatevah — plus how to show them in action.
In this class you will learn:
- How to create your own characters, gags and comic strips.
- Master pen and ink for line work and watercolors for use of color.
- How to show the character in action.
- How to draw emotive expressions for your character.
- How to improve your drawing skills and develop conceptual thinking.
What do students need to bring to class?
A list of supplies you’ll need to pick up before class (Things like ink, paper, erasers, brushes and watercolors) will be e-mailed to all enrollees prior to class. (And bring your imagination!)

Stephen Sweny graduated from The School of Visual Arts in N.Y.C. with a dregree in Media Arts and also attended Pratt Institute for Foundation in Brooklyn, New York. He has worked as an illustrator for The New York Times, Forbes, Business Week, The San Francisco Examiner, National Lampoon, Playboy, Psychology Today, The Chicago Tribune, Scholastic, Fortune, GQ, NY Daily News, Discover and many more magazines, publishers and advertising agencies.
Locally, he has done Illustrations for Atlanta magazine and the AJC and has illustrated over 18 covers for Creative Loafing so far. He is represented by Donna Rosen Artists and has taught Illustration at The Portfolio Center and The Atlanta College of Art. He lives and works in Decatur, Georgia.

We’re located just north of Downtown Atlanta in the Virginia Highlands area. Our Atlanta creative writing students come from Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett County. They come from midtown, Marietta, Norcross, Sandy Springs, near the perimeter, outside the perimeter, on Peachtree or north of metro Atlanta. That includes Suwanee, Lithonia, Lawrenceville, Kennesaw, Emory, Douglasville, Decatur, Chamblee, Conyers, Buford, Alpharetta, Saturn, Pluto, and the occasional escapee from the nearest black hole.
