You’re a great parent. You want to grant your child’s wishes to become the next Dakota Fanning, Jaden Smith or even Justin Timberlake. You want them to explore their creative side and have positive self-esteem (and maybe even pay for their own college tuition with a successful acting career! There are PLENTY of auditions for kid in Atlanta due to the expanding film industry presence here).

Kids on Camera (a program presented through SRL by Atlanta’s Drama Inc.) to the rescue. This acting classes for kids and teenagers will teach basic acting skills to your kids through fun, improvisational and creative games in a positive, supportive, caring and comfortable atmosphere. This acting school for kids is one of the most popular acting classes in Atlanta and is taught by two of the city’s most respected (and working) actors, Cathrine Dyer and Jason MacDonald.

This class is open to aspirations of all levels; from an innovative way to help your child overcome shyness to a resource for information on actual casting calls for movies and TV series currently filming in the area. (In fact, this young- actor program differs from others in Atlanta by providing boots-to-ground advice and information on auditions and the current needs of local casting directors.) Each student will be put on camera in every class, and the clips will be emailed to the parent, with the final class culminating in an on-camera scene from the script of a television show or film.

In this class, each Kids on Camera students will . . .

  • Perform acting exercises and games
  • Rehearse TV and film scenes with classmates
  • Receive encouraging feedback from the instructor, a venerated professional actor
  • Partake in games and exercises that encourage working with others, developing creativity, strengthening self esteem, trust and confidence
  • Have fun

NOTE: A parent is welcome to attend class with their child(ren), and siblings can attend the same class regardless of age difference. The SRL Learning Center is located in the vivacious neighborhood of Virginia Highland. Whole Foods, Home Depot, artisan shopping, interesting restaurants, coffee houses and vintage stores abound. There is plenty to do while your child is attending the workshop if you choose, including the wonderful Beltline stroll, which is steps away from the Learning Center.

Instructor Bios:

Catherine Dyer has built an impressive resume on both sides of the camera. As an actress she has worked in feature films with some of Hollywood’s biggest names. She played Mrs Smith opposite Sandra Bullock in the Oscar winning film The Blind Side, went toe-to-toe with Demi Moore as Sylvia in The Joneses, and shared the screen with Jennifer Lopez in What To Expect When You’re Expecting. Soon, Catherine will be seen playing the wife of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the action thriller Ten, as well as with Jake Gylenhall in David O. Russell’s Nailed. On television, Catherine has had recurring roles on Lifetime’s hit series Army Wives and the USA network’s Golden-Globe nominated Necessary Roughness. Her many guest-star appearances include Drop Dead Diva, House of Payne, The Gates, Past Life and Party of Five. Catherine spent seven years as Supervising Producer of A&E’s Biography, which garnered her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2003.

Jason MacDonald made his professional acting debut on the soap opera Another World and he appeared on every New York based soap including As The World Turns, All My Children, The Guiding Light and as Principal Fletcher on One Life To Live. Jason’s New York stage work includes LaMama, Circle in the Square, Lincoln Center and opposite Frank Langella in the Roundabout Theatre Company production of The Tempest. Jason has worked extensively in commercials, industrials, print and voice over for twenty years. Feature film credits include Life As We Know It, The Family That Preys and The Joneses. Television credits include Necessary Roughness, Drop Dead Diva, House of Payne, Single Ladies, Magic City, Criminal Behavior and as Grayson Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries.

We’re located just north of Downtown Atlanta in the Virginia Highlands area. Our Atlanta creative writing students come from Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett County. They come from midtown, Marietta, Norcross, Sandy Springs, near the perimeter, outside the perimeter, on Peachtree or north of metro Atlanta. That includes Suwanee, Lithonia, Lawrenceville, Kennesaw, Emory, Douglasville, Decatur, Chamblee, Conyers, Buford, Alpharetta, Saturn, Pluto, and the occasional escapee from the nearest black hole.
