Does sitting in a room with 10 writers telling you what they think of your writing scare the crap out of you? Good! It should! But it’s also an excellent way to hone your craft. Under the direction of instructor Suzanne Van Atten, you’ll find an honest but nurturing environment that will help you develop your writing skills and inspire you to produce your best work. This 8-week class is designed for writers working in any nonfiction form (short or book-length), including memoir, travel stories, food features, humor pieces or narrative journalism.

In this class, you will learn how to:

— Craft a compelling lead
— Build a structure
— Create vivid scenes
— Develop tension or humor
— Write authentic dialogue
— Craft a resonant ending

Instructor Suzanne Van Atten is Features Enterprise Editor for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a writing instructor at Emory Continuing Education, a travel book author for Avalon Travel Publishers, and an essayist who has been published in The Gettysburg Review and The Chattahoochee Review.

We’re located just north of Downtown Atlanta in the Atlantic Station shopping village. Our Atlanta creative writing students come from Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett County. They come from midtown, Marietta, Norcross, Sandy Springs, near the perimeter, outside the perimeter, on Peachtree or north of metro Atlanta. That includes Suwanee, Lithonia, Lawrenceville, Kennesaw, Emory, Douglasville, Decatur, Chamblee, Conyers, Buford, Alpharetta, Saturn, Pluto, and the occasional escapee from the nearest black hole.
